Summary

The Richest Man in Babylon captures various parables that educate people on the ways of investment. It starts off from the story of three former classmates. However, in the real life, the men live diametrically different lives. Two of them, Kobbi and Bansir live normal life coupled with poverty. They have to consistently make ends meet. The third classmate, Arkad, is the rich one. He has an excess of supplies and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of gold. It is that state of affairs that prompt the other two into inquiring of their third friend’s fortunes. The story is then built around the life of Arkad and his innumerable investment decisions over time.

Opinion

In essence, the Richest Man in Babylon is an invaluable lesson in the journey to richness. It portrays richness not as royal trait, but a characteristic available to everyone who comes out to work for it. Arkad, is presented as the former poor boy whose meeting by chance delivers to him lifetime lessons on the accumulation of wealth. I find the approach ingrained in Arkad realistic and applicable even in the modern world. Indeed, it is imperative for accumulators of wealth to learn and live by the virtues of investments and savings. It is further proved that merely investing does not necessarily promise heaven. One has to make the right decision based on the state of affairs and conditions. In that context, we learn that wealth accumulation is a process that demands honesty, patience and more importantly consistency. In that journey, there is no room for mistake as any mistakes are bitterly paid for through the attendant consequences.
