Operations management involves decision making for different aspects of the industry such as materials, man, methods, machine, and environment (4M + E) to achieve organization goals efficiently. Effectiveness and efficiency are two different words. The latter involves using less resources and still getting the job done. Different approaches are done by managers. Usually, managers rely on qualitative data, but numerical data is as equally important. Managers have visions for their organization. Armed with the necessary tools, a manager can bring a lot to the table and see what needs to be done. Knowing what needs to be done is one step ahead in planning company strategies.
In my future career, I want to use the competencies that I have learned in this course in a productive manner. I want to be an operations manager in the future, and its job functions are entirely different from the technical functions that I can do now. This course, I hope, opens my eyes to the concepts of continuous improvement (or kaizen), quality management, planning, and root cause analysis. In the industry, there is always a better way of doing things, and it is the staff who knows how to do it the better way. Kaizen involves contributions from the staff for ideas that improve productivity. There is also the concept of quality as a way of life. In ISO 9001 certified companies, people say what they do, they do what they say, and they have records to prove that they do what they ought to do. Another, good companies do strategic planning as a team. Activities aimed at achieving company goals are tackled and laid-out for documentation and implementation afterwards. Lastly, root cause analysis is carefully done to assess the real reason for nonconformities and issues. This is to address the issue and prevent it from occurring again. It is not simply pointing fingers, but providing solutions that work.
These concepts cannot just be applied in work, but in life as well and in being a great student. As a student, I want to acquire the necessary skills and improve on my craft. Change does not have to be abrupt, but it consists of infinitesimal positive steps towards certain goals. This would require discipline from me. Another is in terms of quality. I have to put my best in the things that I do: in my researches, assignments, and projects. Another is on the vision side of things. I have to see the big picture of my life and plan-out short term and long-term goals to accomplish my dreams. Lastly, whenever there are setbacks and challenges, one needs to think, and assess the 4M + E. I need to ask myself consecutively, “why did this happen?” An Ishikawa diagram will be very useful in this scenario. These are just some of the concepts I want to learn. The best part of this is that we can apply it to life as well.
