The most obvious correlation from the novel, World War Z, which links to real-world policy, was in regard to the United States foreign policy. The main character Gerry Lane is traveling to various countries throughout the world with the urging of the United States military to work towards a solution to end the zombie apocalypse before the zombies destroy the entire human race.
The U.S. foreign policy tends to place the military in the midst of problems that are occurring in other places of the world. The goal of foreign policy entails preservation of national security, peace and security throughout the globe, balance of power between nations, workability among allies, promotion of democratic views and human rights, and furthering the cooperation of international trade organizations (US History, 2014).
Similar to the danger that United States government and military put by sending Gerry and other Americans to travel to places in the world to fight, is reminiscent of the constant danger our servicemen and women face on behalf of the U.S. Foreign policies involving aid to other countries. Most recently, the Ebola outbreak was an example of how the U.S. government responds to these world affairs. The deployment of 3,500 to 4,000 troops sent to Liberia in one of the largest operations with military foreign aids to help with the Ebola crisis (Deng, 2014).
The primary point to make in regard to the similarity of real-world policies that is depicted in the novel, World War Z, highlights the expected response of the United States government in a worldwide emergency situation, such as a zombie apocalypse. The urge to take out ‘the others’ for self-preservation and secure the power position leading to the move towards fighting the zombies in the hub of their residence would be fairly realistic to how the United States handles foreign policies (Drezner, 2009). Drezner (2009), “Alas, while this could happen, a more likely outcome would be that, after the initial “Mission Accomplished” banner had been raised, a fresh wave of zombies would rise up, enmeshing the initial landing force — which went in too light and was drawn down too quickly — in a protracted, bloody stalemate” (para.11).
