The Heist: Who Stole the American Dream was directed by Donald Goldmacher and produced by Frances Causey. This was a documentary film that was launched in 2011, and it states how the deregulation policies and procedures led to the Great Recession. The work on the movie started in 2006 when the filmmakers started investigating the behavior and the way undocumented workers were exploited in Arizona.
This documentary provides comprehensive background on the New Deal of Roosevelt that strengthened the middle class and explained a strong movement instigated in 1970 within the business community. This movement led to measures to weaken all the safeguards that led to the banking crisis of 2008, decline of the middle class along with the decline of membership of the Union. This documentary demonstrates how the agendas that were implanted from the conservative movement in 1970s are now happening in both Democratic and Republican administrations.
The Heist reveals how the free trade agreements were aggressively pushed for, such as North American Free trade Agreement as well as how the Commodity future Modernizations Act of 2000 was regulated and the financial market products were highly deregulated. This documentary claims that the financial crisis is the result of the relationship between various corporations and the politicians that included the actions of the recent Presidents Obama and Clinton as well.
The Heist: Who Stole the American Dream provides comprehensive details on two main documents. One document was the National Heritage Foundation’s Mandate for Leadership, which was published when Reagan took control over an office. The second document that was discussed in the documentary was Lewis Powell Attack on Free Enterprise System. This was a memo that was shared with the general public and most significantly, the business community of America. This documentary covers trends of the events that have occurred in the past thirty years and continually refers to these main documents that are mentioned above. This provides an understanding of how these policies have damaged the Union membership in the country. Apart from the decimating policies, it has also raised financial risks to the banking system in the New Deal time and weakened the middle class of the country.
The Heist provides step by step implementation of the memo that was written by Powell when the political parties of country took steps towards outsourcing of jobs, deregulation of different industries and posed risks to the financial sector of the country. All this led to severe financial crisis of 2008 and continued damaged to the American middle class. Currently, the political condition of the country is the major play in powerful and elite class, and there is no importance given to the needs, requirements and dreams of American lower and middle class. There is no documentary made till the current time, which so deeply explains the wealth and power transfer that is made in this century. Even though the documentary has been greatly criticized by the media and critics, it provides a factual explanation to the mass public of how this troublesome situation was created and what is required to restore back the true sense of democracy.
The documentary at the end provides some important solutions and movements on how to face the crisis situation and how the general American community can fight the circumstances. It is a perfect film that can be seen with the family and at parties which provide greater insight to political amateurs on how to deal with a crisis situation and the historical background. It is integral that every American must watch this documentary, and it should be a part of movie library.
