The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) is the foremost intellectual society for chemical engineers worldwide. Established in 1908, the AIChE aims to promote the values right from being a chemical engineer, protect the security of chemical engineers and encourage everyone to implement the benefits and applications of chemical engineering fit to the needs of the society. The members of the AIChE are provided with an enormous catalog of chemical engineering studies, as well as other issues such as responsibilities, ethics, news, etc. In addition, the AIChE provides a calendar of events, activities, and seminars for the members to attend to in case the event is accessible. According to their website, the organization has now 45,000 members from 100 countries enjoying the benefits of their membership. However, in order to understand the benefits of being a member of this organization, the best way is to become a member yourself.
Similar to other organizations and various social media, the application process requires applicant information. However, one good thing about the membership application is that the applicant has the full control over the subscriptions to different departments and publications, and since most of them are for free, the membership can be completed without having any payment. After application, the new members are presented with benefits such as permission and discounts to view publications and papers, monitor the calendar of events and view the summaries of past events, access databases, and interact with other members.
For students, the AIChE offers an online learning center, the AIChE Academy. This online academy features materials, activities and researches that could prove useful especially to students. For example, the viewer can explore various webinars, e-Learning courses, and conference presentations. Furthermore, the AIChE has an accessible interaction with the society and long distance communities using social media. The ChEnected is one of their active social media program that posts events and news regarding the AIChE.
The AIChE has distinct departments that are organized according to their focus of research. These departments include the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), Society for Biological Engineering (SBE), Center for Energy Initiatives (CEI) and Institute for Sustainability (IfS). Each of these departments has their research published in the journals of the AIChE.
The Chemical Engineering Progress (CEP) is a monthly journal of the AIChE. Membership of the AIChE comes with free access to the CEP while offers discounts to other publications such as the AIChE journal, Process Safety Progress, Environmental Progress & Sustainable Energy and other materials. The contents of this publication are filled with research papers regarding chemical engineering and its application and future direction, events of the organization and other relevant events, and other matters such as news and discoveries.
As an example, the January issue of 2015 of the CEP highlights chemical looping, features news such as rewritable paper, calendar of events for the month of January and February, research such as sustainability and other matters.
Lastly, the Code of Ethics of the AIChE covers the society with security and values by encouraging the right conduct towards research and welfare of the society and promoting the security of chemical engineers.
In summary, the AIChE really is the foremost professional society for the chemical engineers and individuals interested in chemical engineering. Membership to the organization features a wide array of benefits from intellectual, social and economic applications of chemical engineering. The access to publications, databases, webinars, conferences and books, together with interaction with other members as well as non-members, really is the best way of showcasing the benefits of chemical engineering.
