Operation management is a wide discipline. Miller notes that operations management is a set of activities or undertakings that create value in the form of services and goods through the transformation of inputs to outputs. Operation management, therefore, involves the management of all the facets of the production system. Operation management has three core functions. The first function is the marketing function. It is where the demand of the created goods and services is generated. Secondly, the decisions in operation management are also tailored to achieve the production goal. It is where the product is created. Finally, the core function of operation management is the tracking of whether the organisation is doing well financially. It is the accounting or finance function. These are the three broad categories of the core functions of operations management as explained by Miller.
The core function of operation management is manifested in various sectors in the business industry in different ways subject to the nature of the goods and services created. Different industries such as commercial banks and airline companies have different ways of marketing and of creating their products. Besides, disparity exists in the nature of goods and services that they deal with, and this affects the marketing techniques and the nature of demand.
It is important to study operations management to ensure that people organise themselves to form a productive enterprise and to know how goods are produced in a more economical way. It also helps individuals understand what the operation managers do. In conclusion, operation management is a vital discipline that assists stakeholders in the course of carrying out their production activities.
