Introduction
The process through which a part of a larger body is selected is called sampling. The selected portion represents the whole population. Sampling is done with the aim of making inferences about the larger population from the smaller sample that is selected. The appropriate sampling design that would be used to survey students on the college campus is the cluster sampling.
The sampling concepts
The population of the college campus is about 30,000 students. The approximate number of males is about 17,000 while that of females is about 13,000. The sampling frame for this sampling process will be the data from the registrar, the list of students in all the six schools in the college. (Lohr, 2009)
Cluster elements
The population of the college will be divided into clusters. The six schools on the college campus will be the clusters of the total population of the college campus. The selected population of each cluster is heterogeneous in that it contains both males and females. The cluster element, unit, in each school is people. The unit can also be said to be people of a particular department, for example, people of the School of Engineering. (Lohr, 2009)
Procedure
The data on the population of people from the registry is first collected. The next step is to divide the population of the students into clusters, schools. Random selection of the samples from each cluster sample is done next. The selected samples will be used to represent the population of the total population.
The sampling design to be used when conducting a survey in a larger population is the multi-stage sampling. The multi-sampling design uses more stages to ensure that the sample is perfect.
