EFS offers protection from the risk of one user accessing files of another user without appropriate permission. It also protects against the risk of the file being secured in one location and being unprotected when moved to another location (Antony & Brien 2008). EFS provides protection all files without restrictions and difficulties to the user including on executables. EFS does not offer protection against the risk of losing data. EFS protection is directly linked to the users password, limiting the technologies protection against the risk of access by people who might have access to the users password. FEK refers to a File Encryption Key (ElcomSoft. 2007). It is used to encrypt the files on the disk stored in their attributes. The FEK is encrypted using the master key. Multiple people can be granted access to an EFS-encrypted file by ensuring that the users have EFS certificates. The sharing also requires the creation of a file share, the remote session or web folder.
NTFS is enabled at the volume level, calculated according to logical file size and enforced on per user basis. FSRM is enabled on volume or folder level, calculated according to actual disk space occupied by files and enforced on a per volume or per folder basis (TechnetMicrosoft 2008). The FSRM determines usage through the use of default Quota Templates such as the 200 MB Limit Reports to User. The NTFS determines usage through quota templates created by the user that defines space limits and sets notifications to be generated when the quota limit approaches or is exceeded. An organization may choose to use the FSRM because folder or volume are used for quota tracking. Actual disk space does disc usage calculation, and the notification mechanism is through e-mail, custom reports, running commands and event logs. Organizations may choose to use the NTFS because it gives them the flexibility in the creation, use and management of templates for both quotas and file screens. It also supports quota tracking per user on a volume (Ben 2009).
