Racism is so strongly built in society today that it feels like a natural phenomenon. Children from a very young age when their minds are in the developmental phase are exposed to such racism; therefore, they are conditioned in a way that this behavior extends to future life as well. School books and stories describe how the Afro-American is always the culprit and the American or “white guy” is the hero of most stories. If not directly, but somewhere this element of racism gets transferred to the child’s subconscious memory and determines his actions and reactions.
As a result, of the 9/11 attacks Muslims in America have had to experience hate crime which has gained momentum in the recent past. Hate crime is the most unjust forms of punishing a person because it takes its origins from factors that are not in the individual’s control. I as an individual feel strong about hate crime and that this form of crime should be eliminated completely as it holds no grounds. Based on an individual’s sentiments about a minority group it should be intolerable when a hate crime is practiced or preached. This is what I want to devote my life towards and help those who face such mental and physical torture in everyday lives be it at their workplace or shopping malls.
Being in love with a Middle Eastern Muslim boy brought me closer to the area of law. He was injured so severely that his nerves were injured and stopped functioning properly leaving him disabled should be an eye-opener for all of us. Regardless if one is aware of the law or not, but this is a violation of human rights and needs to be brought to public notice. It is the responsibility of the criminal justice system to defend the rights of those who are served unjustly, and unless a person is unable to feel the sentiments of this disadvantaged group they will not be able to fight for their rights. Since, I am a staunch believer of freedom of living and independence in making choice one a person reaches a mature age I have chosen to become a government public defender.
This may be just one case where two individuals had to experience harsh repercussions simply because we were from separate religions. Situations like this make me want to speak up against the cruelties faced by minorities or other groups of society. It should be in the hands of the law alone to decide who gets punished and who doesn’t. When a person is in love, he does not deserve to be treated the way the Middle Eastern Muslim boy was treated. This case accurately describes hate crime that is present in society today. Somebody has to take the initiative and bring this to public notice rather than sitting behind closed doors and sweeping the matter under the carpet. If a hate crime is not put to a stop today, then tomorrow many other individuals might have to experience the torment and torture as faced by the person I loved whose only fault was to love me.
This situation has been an eye opener for me, and I consider it my calling. People have their moments where it finally occurs to them what they want to devote their life towards and for me this is the moment. If I can even help make a difference in the life of one person and change their perception of hate crime, then I may have done my part in helping make the world a more peaceful place. The law has been defined for our benefit, and it is the responsibility of the government to ensure it is implemented in a just and fair manner. Justice is for all regardless of sect, religion, race or gender. The law must protect everyone from the unfair and I want to be a part of providing justice to those who deserve it.
