SIX SIGMA

Six sigma is a quality assessment tool used by several corporate so as to reduce or completely eliminate wastes. Most of the organizations we see today struggle to keep up with the ever changing competition due to the inability of effectively managing the quality of their products, processes and services. Dr W Edwards Deming known as the father of Quality Management stated that higher authorities in any organization must drive out any fear from their subordinates. I however feel that, Jack Welch was right in proposing this training module to his team of managers. Six Sigma is the need of the hour as only quality efficient businesses thrive in the market today. Even though the mangers are given a benefit of a 40% hike in their bonuses, it is only a means of encouraging them to be a part of making them catalysts so that the employees are able to accept the change due to the support from their respective department heads. It is a life term investment and also is a motivational step as efficient employees are considered to be more productive, proactive and deliver better quality products. It is not a negative imposition of power by the senior management as the employees are not forced to do something which is not of any benefit to them. They are merely given an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally which is a major attribute to their career development. With regard to the bonus hike, I feel that it will not be such a big burden when compared to the level of production and quality after the training program is delivered. Quality improvement and waste management will ensure a significant rise in the level of production thus making a positive impact on the profits. It will help to raise employee morale as they will find their tasks easy to perform and will also be motivated to put in more efforts. Hence, I feel that this move is more of a motivational one than that of an exploitative one.
