Social Change In America Report
Dr. Eitzen highlights a number of issues in his piece “The Atrophy of Social Life”. One of the more notable issues Dr. Eitzen brings up is that of employees changing jobs. This is due partially to employees choosing to change jobs, but primarily to workers being laid off or fired. Changing jobs is also part of the contributing factors to one of the other issues Dr. Eitzen talks about; people are moving more often than ever. This means they leave behind the relationships they have formed, and are hesitant to form new ones lest they move again.
Although Dr. Eitzen comments on social media and its effects on our social interactions, the full spectrum of how detrimental the effects of social media would be had not yet emerged. Facebook had just launched in 2004. In fact, “a new study from the University of Michigan psychologist Ethan Kross argues that that’s exactly how it makes us feel [unhappy]Kross found that the more people used Facebook in the time between the two texts, the less happy they felt..” (“How Facebook Makes Us Unhappy”). People are suffering more from depression than ever, and it has a lot to do with the effects of social media.
If we could somehow make our neighborhoods more diverse I think it would change how I learn. It would give people more viewpoints to see different situations through and to learn through. Also, schools would be more fairly funded instead of having richer and poorer public schools.
