Technology has given us more disadvantages than advantages. First and foremost, the advancement of technology that is now used at our fingertips in the form of phones, tablets, and laptops, has greatly impacted our personal lives. We use the technologies to store our personal records, passwords, credit card information when we online shop. Additionally, we use these technologies to log on to many social media websites to share where we are and what we are doing at different hours of the day. We might consider these activities to be fun, but they often lead to a huge disadvantage, a breach of confidentiality and privacy. Hackers can infiltrate our software to use this information against us. Hackers often steal this personal information and use it to commit fraud by stealing identities, either against individual persons or larger companies, as in the case in the recent Sony privacy breach. Furthermore, felons and convicts are now becoming tech savvy and watching social media posts to see when you and your family will be on vacation, making it a perfect opportunity to commit the crime and breaking and entering. Other disadvantages to the use of technology include its effect on school-aged children in the form of distraction, aiding in cheating, and cyber bullying. Lastly, we have become so dependent on technology that we often forget how to socially engage with others. We no longer know how to communicate with others on a face-to-face contact. We have become socially awkward and often fill the silence with checking our emails, texting others, and updating social media.
