Technology plays a vital role in our day to day life. Majority of people across the world utilize technology for professional or personal work and largely depend on it. Use of Smartphone, computers, internet and other technical devices has become common. Internet is now considered as an essential part of daily lives. The objective of this paper is to discuss positive impacts of the technology and internet in human lives, along with analysing how technology and internet has become part of our life.
Technology and internet has affected every aspect of human life; right from communication to commuting, hygiene to health, sports to science, training to tourism and defence to daily life. Technology has improved human health and lives, and due to advanced technology, many calamitous diseases are eliminated. There has been a substantial improvement in child births and pregnancy related deaths. Life of women is secure during child birth and children mortality rate has dipped considerably due to technological innovations.
Technology and internet has converted the whole world into a global village. Today, people do not need to be physically present at every place, but they can complete a number of works by video conferencing, internet banking, digital signing and various other similar facilities. Technology and internet has revolutionarily changed lives of people in every part of the world. Technology and internet has revolutionarily changed the methods of communication in every part of the world.
Technology and internet has changed the area of education. Internet has helped people in accessing every kind of information and technology has helped people in receiving information in convenient ways. Today, students, researchers and teachers can avail a variety of valuable and free information from any parts of the world. The best part of receiving information through latest technology and internet is that it does not cost much and is cheaper than traditional methods of information.
Today, technology has enabled poor people and empowered them to enjoy privileged facilities that were earlier available to rich class only. People of African region and Asia can enjoy and avail all benefits on just a click that are accessed by Americans or Europeans. Technology and internet affect people, but at the same time they also contribute in making the environment greener. Technology helps us in making the earth pollution free and a safer place for every creature.
Thompson (2008) in his article mentioned that Facebook brought revolution in the field of communication. Social media have now become an important tool of communication. There are a number of social networking sites that help people in communicating with friends and family at almost no cost. Special apps and software, provided by the social networking sites allow users to track their friends. People remain in constant touch with their family and friends through various social networking sites.
Social media and various apps on the internet help people in communicating with their friends. Thompson mentions that multiple texts, pictures and messages posted by different friends may seem pointless at one time, but these updates bring friends closer than ever before. Experience of social media, described by Thompson is “It’s like I can distantly read everyone’s mind” (Thompson). Social media allows people to stay in touch even when they are travelling. It is a convenient and cost-effective way to remain in touch with friends and family (Thompson).
Carr (2008) mentioned that technology has changed the way people used to get information. Earlier, researchers were required to spend long hours in the library and with the books in order to get information on specific subject. Now people can find desired information in seconds just by clicking links on the internet. Different types of search options provided by Google allowed readers to get any type of information in minimum time. However, Google changed the way that brain processes the information. Some people claim that Google has reduces people’s capacity to concentrate on long piece of information and also reduces their contemplation (Carr).
People are now familiar and accept the information in a way, how it is distributed over the internet. Sullivan (2008) mentions that writers also changed the way, they used to present their ideas. Present information distribution system is user friendly and accepted by readers as well as authors. Sullivan said that writers also experiment with different writing formats in order to take their ideas and voice effectively to the readers. Blogs, social media, and other forms are being used by the authors to write information. Blog is an easy and convenient platform for new writers (Sullivan).
Internet provides effective platform to all individuals to present their information and ideas to the world. Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State in her speech said that it is essential to take care of human rights online as we do it offline. Hillary Clinton said that all countries across the world should promote internet freedom because human rights are universal and all people have right to express their feelings in public space as well as on their blogs. Internet helped people in exposing corruption, solving different problems, sharing opinions, and informing people about different things (Clinton).
Hillary Clinton talked about privacy issues and confidentiality of information. She said that nothing comes free from challenges. Therefore, it is important to protect the system, instead of asking people to stop use of internet. Different functions performed by internet cannot be replaced by any other medium that is completely safe. Internet is now an integrated part of life of human beings. It helps people to perform their personal works such as communicating with friends and family, bill payments and shopping. Companies also utilize internet to promote and sell their products (Clinton).
Shen, Liu, and Wang (2012) in their study analyzed different factors that motivate children to use internet. The authors’ tries to analyze what motivate people especially young children to use internet. The use of internet is driven either by basic needs or by leisure activities. Time spent on the internet also decide the positive and negative usability of the internet. People use internet to fulfil their basic needs such as information, education, work and knowledge. However, use of internet may become harmful if used for long hours on leisure activities (Shen et al.).
However, people get enormous information and help on any issue from the internet, there is a mixed opinion of people on the issue of technology. Some opine that technology and internet has affected our lives in positive ways and has made our lives much easier. They corroborate their argument by giving examples of bill payments, E-commerce, banking, shopping, E-mailing, social media and various other purposes. Technology affects each and every aspect of human life.
There are people who criticize and blame technology for various complexities. They say that technology and internet has made our brain stupid as it is easy to get any information in no time by using internet, hence, people has stopped reading books and articles for getting information. Technology and internet negatively affects our physical as well as mental health, while spending long hours on social networking websites is adversely impacting our relationships in real life (Shneora and Efrat).
There may be two sides of technology and internet like every other thing of this world, but no one can deny that technology and internet has affected millions of lives in a positive manner. Technology and internet affect every aspect of human life. We can also improve our planet by using technology and get rid of the problem of growing pollution. It has been observed that technology has improved many chronic problems that were considered incurable.
After considering benefits, significance and role played by technology and internet in every aspects of human life, the paper concludes that technology and internet has positively affected our life. Technology and internet has brought various changes in our life and has become an inseparable part of our life. Technology and internet has opened the ocean of knowledge and information for people. Now people of any part of the world can access every kind of information that was not available previously. Technology and internet has made our life convenient in lesser effort and lesser cost.
