The federal government has different preparedness and mitigation programs for different disasters that might face the nation. Despite the increasing severity and frequency of different kinds of catastrophes striking people, the federal government is developing possible ways of preventing and mitigating the impacts of disasters. The natural hazards are most manageable in some ways because of predictions and availability of effective measures of mitigation (“Federal Emergency Management Agency (fema)”).
Utilization of other agencies’ services is one of these programs. The President and the federal government have the authority of establishing programs of disaster preparedness that utilize the services of appropriate agencies. This aspect includes the preparation of plans for disaster preparedness for recovery, warning, rehabilitation, emergency operations and mitigation (Bea, Keith). It also includes training, exercise, post disaster evaluations, annual program reviews, coordination of federal preparedness programs, and application of science, technology, and research (National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on Risk-Based Analysis for Flood Damage Reduction). There is technical assistance for the establishment of programs and plans where the federal government provides and enhances technical assistance in developing practicable programs and comprehensive plans for the preparations for possible disasters, including mitigation, avoidance and hazard reduction (United States. Government Accountability Office).
Federal preparedness and mitigation encompass grants and allocation of funds for the development programs and plans. These funds are detailed in a federal plan that contains details of the programs for the preparation against emergencies and key disasters. The preparedness and mitigation also involve the establishment of a comprehensive system of information that identifies and assesses all the risks involved in the disaster-prone areas (United States. Government Accountability Office). Additionally, it involves the integration of this information system into the design and planning of the human settlements in such areas. The federal government has strong global, local, regional and national systems of early warning to alert the populations of impending disasters.
