The Causes Of Job Stress Essay Sample
According to the statistics, people spend approximately 40% of their time at work. It does not matter what type of work you are doing, every job contains some level of stress. You can feel stressful when you are working on serious project and suddenly the computer turns off, when you stay after working day to help your colleagues with the workload, when your head is giving you some extra tasks, or you did not have day off for many days, etc. To sum up everything that was mentioned above, we can differentiate between three main causes of job stress: conflict of roles, not interesting job and overwork. I am sure that you are familiar with them and will recognize the situations while reading this essay.
Conflict of roles appears when chiefs demand contradictory requirements from their employees. For example, shop assistant can have the task to immediately react to the requests of customers, but when head sees him talking with the clients, he reminds about filling in the shelves with goods. Conflict of roles can also appear if the principle of undivided authority is violated. Two chiefs can give the employee contradictory instructions. For example, head asked to concentrate on the number of people the company has to hire, whereas QA manager demands qualitative workers. As a result, person feels lot and does not know how he/she should behave and what to pay attention to – number or quality. As if she listens to the first person, she will receive the reprimand from the second one and vice versa.
Not interesting job can be the second reason of job stress. According to many researches, employees who have more interesting job are less anxious and more rarely suffer from physical ailment than those who are doing the work that they do not like. Monotonous and uneventful work arouses the feeling of futility and worthlessness of person’s existence. The time in this case flows extremely slowly causing mental stress and the employee is counting minutes till the working day is over. In such case the common “self-treatment” from boredom is chatting with coworkers, having tea several times per day, having smoking breaks, etc.
Overwork can also lead to the physical stress. When the employee receives the task to complete something within the short period of time, he is giving all his efforts to complete this task and as the result he is exhausted and tired. It is completely clear that when you do not have enough time, you get nervous. If employee works in the rush on the constant basis, emotional tension is accumulating and sooner or later it can lead to the depression and health problems. Sometimes the blame for rush work in the office lie comes not from the abundance of work but from the lack of time management. Try to plan your day so that the work was divided into blocks. Even though the job takes up to 40% of our life, we should not concentrate on it. The constant stress leads to mental and physicals problems and the work is not worth of it. If the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest or motivation and if you see that the situation will not change in future, it is better to change the employer or the occupation. Health is the most important in life , and there are thousands of jobs and you can definitely find the less stressful one.
