Different kind of emotions can be accompanied by tears. They are considered to be an important part of feeling expression. No matter, how positive of negative the emotion is, it can lead to tears if the feeling is strong. Besides, tears can be often used as a persuasive and trust building technique by the representatives of both genders.
The written article by Jocelyn Noveck indicates how tears can be perceived by the society. According to the journalist, it depends on who is actually crying and the type of the process. The participants of the study were convinced in men’s crying and preferred a moist eye than an open crying. This means that the audience has less trust to the crying women. The study can be widely used by the public figures. Actually, the crying techniques were successfully approved even before the study. The noticed tear in Bill Clinton’s eye helped to save his career. In his case, a teardrop appeared to be powerful means of persuasion. It was not only acceptable by the society but rather desirable. Hence, the male reserved crying is considered to be the sign of strong and true feelings. Such tears should not be hidden.
On the contrary, an openly crying woman seems to be dishonest. Females are considered to be more emotional than males. Therefore, tears are not exceptional in women’s behavior. It is an ordinary action, which is often indicates the possible irrationality and inability to gain control over the situation. A female public figure can only cry in rare situations because otherwise she will lose the trust and respect. Despite the fact that the tears are natural, they may not be acceptable in public.
