An Example that Illustrates the Current Definition
Today one of the mostly using words is manager. We hear it every single day in the office, in educational organizations, in restraints, etc. and every time it comes in different context. There are many types of managers but three groups of managers can be distinguished in organizations depend on the position of manager. They are top managers, middle managers and first line managers.
In past it was easy to understand this word as a person who manage people in the office but over years the definition has become wider. Now manager is not only someone who gets results through other people but it has broader tasks including managing processes, assets, resources, talents and others.
The notion of manager is fairly indefinite due to so called “managerial revolution”. The definition of the word manager is so expanded in management, business, economic and organization that there is no universally accepted definition. In the business encyclopedia manager is described as “a person responsible for controlling or administering all or part of a company or similar organization” moreover it provides four other definition for this issue such as: 1. a person who controls activities, business dealing, group of musicians; 2. a person in charge of training of sports and tactics; 3. “a student who assists the coach of an athletic team” in a high school or college; 4. the last is a program or system that controls or organizes a peripheral device or process, for example file manager (The Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English, 2009). Whereas Gartaganis (1984) gives the following answer for the question ‘who is a manger?’; vice president in charge of international operations, supervisor of data processing, treasurer, hospital administrator, school principal, postmaster. It is seen that in 1984 the definition was not as broad as it is in current years.
In conclusion the definition of managers has changed over years and it is continuing to gain new definitions as a file manager. As long as business science develops creating new branches, new definitions of manager come out.
