The difference between a Solid State Drive (SSD) and SATA Hard Drive (HDD)
The PC users have a choice of configuring their systems with either an HDD or SSD. What is the best choice? “Both SSDs and HDDs do the same job: They boot your system, store your applications, and store your personal files. But each type of storage has its own unique feature set” (Domingo, 2015). The HHD is the basic nonvolatile storage of the computer. It consists of metal platters that have a magnetic coating. The data is stored on interconnected flash memory chips in the SSD. It retains the data even when there's no power.
Both systems have advantages and disadvantages. The SSDs costs more than HDDs. The HDD is older and will become less expensive for the nearest future. A hard drive takes more time to speed up and it is slower than SSD which boots, launches applications and performs faster.
The SSD units rank at 4TB but they still cost a lot of money. Usually you will find 500GB to 1TB SSD units as primary drives while 500GB is considered to be a "base" hard drive
Another important factor is fragmentation. It is used by HDD to scatter the large file around the disk pattern while filling up. The SSD does not get fragmented because the data is stored on the chips where is no physical read head.
The SSDs keep the data more safe in case you drop your laptop or shake the system because it has not moving parts like HDDs. It also provides silent operation while hard drives make a lot of noise because of read arm moving back and forth or drive spinning.
Because of relying on spinning platters, the HDDs have a limit to how small can they be manufactured. The SSD do not have such limitation.
In conclusion, HDD’s advantages are price, capacity, and availability but SSDs will be more useful if take into account speed, ruggedness, form factor and noise. Taking into account all there reasons, the amount of space you need and how much you can spend will make your hard drive choosing experience a piece of cake.
