The Gospel Primer’ is a book that is written as a guide to Christians in understanding the gospel and practicing it in their daily lives. It has one main purpose: to help believers to clearly and tirelessly rehearse the gospel to themselves in a confident way. It challenges Christians and non-believers as well to evaluate their personal understanding of the gospel and trying to live according to its teachings. Many people just read the gospel, discuss it and even teach about it without getting the deeper meaning and understanding of the gospel. Vincent states that in Paul’s most letters to churches, a bigger portion of them are given over to practicing or rehearsing gospel truths. When Paul was preaching the gospel, he also showed the Christians as well as the non-believers how it applied to their day to day lives, and this was Paul’s way of administering the gospel to people. Vincent also discusses on the reasons as to why we should practice the gospel daily in part one of his book. He does this by laying out a clear understanding of the book and by also giving his account or personal journey that provides us with more insight through the journey of the gospel.
He provides us with thirty-one reasons on why we should rehearse the gospel. Accompanying these reasons Vincent offers a number of scriptures that will help readers understand the gospel better. By reading the Bible and getting the spiritual nourishment that is filled with God’s grace. In part three of the book Vincent presents the gospel in a captivating poetic narrative, this approach makes the book an interesting read that is easy to grasp and understand. Apart from heaven, God’s tremendous power is manifested in the gospel. The Holy Bible describes the gospel as the power of God (Vincent 7). In this description, he argues that the gospel is not just powerful but also the definitive entity that contains God’s mercies that are demonstrated in their work.
The main theme presented in this book is how to study, understand, and practice the gospel by rehearsing it and applying whatever we learn from it in our day to day lives. By embracing faith and the urge to know the wonders of God in all that he does in our lives by reading the gospel. As long as we are bound by God’s power and the power of the gospel we will get all protection against the power and fury of evil that rage against us in our daily lives (Vincent 10). One of the most important attribute that this book teaches us is consistency. If we should rehearse the gospel in the way that we are taught we should make it a habit of studying or reading it often.
For us to achieve the ultimate purpose of the gospel we should always remind ourselves what our purpose in living is. We can only achieve this by continuously reminding ourselves as well as others of God’s requirement of humankind. By doing this, then we will be assured that the gospel has served its purpose in our lives, and we are achieving what it teaches us by rehearsing it. Vincent argues that we are always vulnerable to defeat and injury through the devious ways of evil. It is, therefore, worthy for us to wake up each and every day wearing the full armor of the gospel to ward away the defeats that we face every day. There is no better way of doing this by preaching the gospel to ourselves and others and make it an obsession of our hearts.
Another important aspect that we learn from this book is the attitude of grace. The Bible is the main foundation of the gospel. All the directions and teachings of a pure Christian life are derived from the Bible. We should make it upon ourselves to study this holy book as Vincent encourages us in order to remind ourselves of what is required of us by God. The book uses heavy reference of the Bible with the author providing many scriptures for reference to the points he has put forth. By presenting the second and third parts of the book in narrative form outlines the manifestation of grace in the life of the author. He presents the second part in person whereby he attests to what God has done to him and what he can do to all of us.
