Attendance and punctuality are those traits that a company demands of an employee. An employee should have these qualities in order to pave the way for success in the company. Moreover, a company has much to gain from having an employee who is punctual and who is not frequently absent from work.
Attendance and punctuality go hand in hand in an organization. Every company is keen to search for an employee who is possessed of these traits. When a company finds such an employee, it tries its best not to lose him. An employee who is responsible and carries out his duties is never unnecessarily be absent from work. Similarly, a responsible employee is punctual and tries his best to complete his projects before the deadlines he has been given by the company. Also, he is punctual upon his arrival at the office and tries to be on time for every task given him. This kind of responsible employee realizes the effect of attendance and punctuality on his job performance. Therefore, he is never absent without a good reason.
The reason for such emphasis on attendance is that absences has a great impact on job performance and teamwork within a company. Consequently, overall the team is affected. An employee who is frequently absent is left unaware of the event and changes that take place in the company. He does not know about the daily affairs of the company and hence is left behind and cannot participate in the matters and issues of which he has no knowledge. Moreover, absences affect an employee’s projects because he makes an attempt to perform well on those projects, but on account of the absences, he is not able to complete them within the deadlines that were specified. Hence, he submits his projects late. Furthermore, if a project is really important for the company, then other employees will take over his project in order to complete it on time. Consequently, he loses credit for a project that he himself was assigned and makes a bad impression on his colleagues. This can also have an affect on the services provided to clients, as the projects are handled with multiple minds and in a hurry, compromising the quality of the project. Thus, it can be a cause of loss for the company.
Lack of attendance adversely affects the production of the company. A company is at loss annually due to poor production or reduced production because of the absences of its employees. In addition to an individual’s job performance, which is affected by unnecessary absences, an entire team also faces problems due to an employee’s irregular presence and irresponsible attitude. The lack of attendance of an employee causes the regular employees on a team to work more, as the workload provided to the absent employee is transferred to the employees present on the team. This makes the employees on the team work more, and they can get frustrated and discouraged. The morale can decrease in these employees, and they may not work efficiently. Subsequently, the company is affected by the decline in the production of the organization.
Furthermore, if a team has to finish a task assigned to an absent employee, resentment can develop among the punctual employees on the team, and they might act against him. This negativity impacts the team, as a team is expected to work together. Combined efforts are diminished due to routine absences of an employee. Hence, the team cannot produce efficient results for a project, as they do not work hand in hand. On a team, if a significant employee is missing, the entire workload has to be reorganized by the team members. This can result in a delay in the submission of the project, which ultimately influences the quality and productivity of the company. The quality is compromised because the team manages to complete the task faster in order to meet the deadline. Furthermore, the employees may seek other job opportunities, as they will get tired of doing the job assigned to others. No one on the team will selflessly work double what they should for the absent employee. In the end, the company is deprived of the good employees. Therefore, the company should take the necessary steps to resolving this issue. In order to reduce the number of absences and improve the attendance of employees, the company could indulge in healthy conversation with the employees to resolve their issues, which can reduce absences. Moreover, the company could offer paid sick leaves to the employees. However, these sick leaves are found to be used in an incorrect manner, with employees often taking leaves when they are healthy.
In conclusion, attendance plays a major role in maintaining the performance of an employee on a team of a company. Also, a team works more efficiently when every single one of the employees are punctual and have the least number of absences.
