Captain Edith Strong is a veteran who has been working with the law enforcement agency for more than 18 years and is working as a watch commander in Rogersville’s Field Operation Division. White men were mainly employed in this field operation, and every officer had an assigned job which had to be performed in a systematic manner. The officers that have been assigned to a special task has a higher morale and satisfaction level, and they are able to create a trustworthy relationship as they can communicate with other officers. On the other hand, the officers on patrol are most irritated as they have a constant workload that mainly made the officers bypass the work when they were on duty. Since two officers were assigned same shift duty, there was little communication and less relationship development with other officers. This led to low morale and low skill set in the division (Vito and Walsh, 2012).
As mentioned above, there are many issues in the department that requires Captain Strong’s attention, and it is crucial that these issues must be dealt with on an urgent basis. The patrol officers are annoyed with their job and have been persistently about their job as they feel frustrated, with low morale. The turnover rates have been high in this department with complaints from the general public, disability claims and longer response time. It is important that Captain Strong must design a program that helps in focusing and meeting the needs and requirements of her department and employees. Another approach to dealing with the issue is to increase communication between two patrol officers on duty who can meet at break time. This will increase inter-connectivity between employees and increase their confidence level (Vito and Walsh, 2012).
Specific motivational strategies that can be recommended
It is important that motivational strategies must be applied in order to improve overall job performance, reduce high turnover rates and improve the job satisfaction level. The officers must be given to communicating with each others. They should be given a good amount of time during the break to sit together and interact with each other (Vito and Walsh, 2012). This will improve their social skills and will help increase their motivation level. Captain Strong can implement process theories and content theories as motivational strategies. These theories are better able to complement each other as the process theory discusses how to motivate whereas the content theory establishes what or whom to motivate. The theories that can be implemented by Captain Strong are Theory Y and Equity Theory. The equity theory is the theory of fairness at all levels, which will increase employee motivation level and theory Y deals with the fact that if lower levels needs such as physiological, security and social needs of employees are satisfied that will perform better in order to attain higher level needs such as self-esteem and self-actualization (Vito and Walsh, 2012).
Is E.R.G theory applicable?
The E.R.G theory is not applicable in this case as E.R.G theory discusses growth, existence, and relatedness, and it deals with law enforcement with no need to meet human requirements. This means that higher level needs of human beings must be satisfied before lower-level needs are met. This cannot be applied in this case as Captain Strong first has to motivate the lower level needs of employees.
Application of job enlargement or job enrichment
Job enlargement is certainly unnecessary in this case as officers are already overloaded with work and feel overworked. Job enrichment can be added by adding more of a social factor to the patrol officers' duty hours which will help in enriching their job.
