"Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you are thrown into prison. ‘Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent’” (Matthew 5:25).
Literally, Christians should avoid lawsuits over money matters. Jesus words had motives of educating his crowd about the kingdom of God and matters of money. The verse teaches about hard feelings that are known to be the cause of destroying many friendships. Nevertheless, it goes contrary to human nature to humble them as well as seeking for reconciliation. But Jesus gives human two key essential reasons to reconcile. Jesus explained to his disciples that hatred in the humans is like the act of murder and probably can put someone in danger of hell fire (Matthew 5:22). If humans do not choose the way of peace or go an extra mile then, they run the danger of having the law acted upon them and suffer the consequences. The Christians are informed that if they strife instead of peace, the Father will not defend them. Therefore, they will have to live with the results (Matthew 5:25). In spiritual application, if the Christians repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, it is like settling out of lawsuits with God.
Likewise, in business, entrepreneurs should avoid lawsuits over money matters. Conflicts among companies become hard to solve and result in bankruptcy to the owners. Hard feelings in the business result in destroying friendships among the entrepreneurs. In Jesus teaching, friendship making enhances unity and create an ample environment for a company to operate. Jesus is telling us to take responsibility for our actions by simply working with our creditors and to reconcile as well as paying back the debt. Using the court to decide and settle matters is expensively for both parties. Jesus is insisting and advising entrepreneurs to settle matters quickly with those adversaries who are taking them to court. The main point of this verse is to seek reconciliation to avoid a harsh judgment later. Additionally, repentance includes taking phases in order to prevent same decisions, for instance, refraining from the use of credit cards. Eventually, humans are debtors to God’s mercy. Jesus came to release us from the debt of sin he went to great lengths to pay off our debt through his death.
According to “The Wall Street Journal,” The drums of war beat hard on the economy of the respective countries (Davis, 2002). Jesus warns on the outcomes of conflicts, and he said it is better we solve the matter before reaching the courts. Countries that experiences war and conflicts fails to adhere and do according to Jesus teaching. By Jesus saying that, “Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent” (Matthew 5:25) This is crystal clear that war makes a country that was marching two steps forward to move one backward. Former United States President Bush discovers that the cost of Iraq war may top up to $100 billion (Davis, 2002). The hostilities would drive the country into a downturn or a constant period of inflation (Davis, 2002). All these are as a result of war if there could be a mediator and reconciliation the doubts of the recession could be absence. Jesus tries to convey the message that prevention is better than cure. Therefore, let us be ready to reconcile and choose peace to prevent suffering from the consequences of the law.
