OUTLINE
The Prehistoric period is represented by the great Pyramid of Giza.
It was built as burial spots for the pharaoh and the entire royal family. The building is commissioned by Pharaoh Khufu and construction overseen by the architect Imhotep.
The pyramid is a representation of the attachment that the early Egyptian society has with life after death and the use of symbolism in all of art during this period.
Its modern day application is showing the undiscovered potential that lies in the human brain.
The Renaissance Period: The Monalisa
The Renaissance period is represented by Leonardo da Vinci’s “the Mona Lisa”.
This is a portrait of an unnamed lady done for the royal family.
The painting of the Mona Lisa has been heavily influenced by the previous gothic art and shows the move of artists during the renaissance from symbolism to realism and humanism.
Its application to the modern society is the theme of superiority of scientific enquiry as opposed to irrational thought.
The Romanticism Period: The Destruction
The Romanticism period is represented by Thomas Cole’s painting, “The Destruction”.
This is part of a series that the artist does to highlight the negative impacts of industrialization and formation of empires.
It reveals the pessimism the artists harbor about the whole issue of industrialization.
The painting just like other forms of art during Romanticism has been heavily influenced by the previous Medieval period.
The modern day application of this painting is the development of concepts such as liberalism and nationalism.
