The Puritans’ Religious Way Of Life Essay Example

The New England way of life was a theological movement and a liturgical one. It was intensely concerned with reshaping the traditional way of life of the Church of England. Puritans came to launch and create a new church and not to conduct an experiment of opposition. The Puritans were not in favor of religious tolerance. They migrated away from England because the country did not want anything to do with their church. Puritans did not wish to conform to the Church of England ways.
The insidious side of their theology involved confronting the dangers of Satan and his missions. The act of witchcraft, necromancy, curses, and demonic were seen as theological and no less biblical. The acts were inserted into one social conflict. At times, it had terrifying results. An example is during 1692 were twenty people died who were accused of such social conflict. The people were hanged to death.
In the new religious nation of America, notions of covenant and closeness had become more internalized as seen by Martin. What the Puritans had done in the early years, it was still recognized even in 1960. The president of the United States acknowledges the work the Puritans did. The president notes that, the forefathers made the covenant a long time, and the nation should keep it flourishing. Someone would agree with Martin about fundamentalism not being an old time religion. The Church will preach against science but use science instruments.
It is true that evangelical Protestants have focused more on private issues of morality. There are many homeless people in America. An individual would be more concerned judging a person who did an abortion and not about the homelessness afflicting many people. During presidential campaigns, voters scrutinize the private life of the politician rather than the work he or she has accomplished or will accomplish.
Puritans believe they are the end of times and are sure an apocalypse is going to happen which is the day of doom. The Puritans perceive a vision of New Jerusalem where there is a land chosen for them. Cotton Mathers, the first preacher of Boston church prophesies the exact date the world will end. John Edwards also sees that the end has come. Jonathan starts to look for catastrophes and any calamities and sees it as Gods plan.
