IT Function Overview
The role of IT in Terra Firma is considered key in supporting the Terra Firma Company to accomplish its main goals. The IT role supports the company’s research work, testing and developments activities that contribute to the value addition for its customers.
Current IT function
First Terra Firma Company makes available to its 180 full-time IT team the different types of software and hardware that include Microsoft desktop and IBM AS/400 servers to run Edward, software. All other major departments including that of Information Technology and operations were fully and properly functional until March 2011 when Terra Firma’s network system failed leading to significant money loss and frustrations. Terra Firma Company took this issue as a lesson. They took this opportunity to examine critically and reorganize their way of doing things. The Fast step was by focusing massive investments in the IT infrastructure and management alongside other company operational activities such as accounting, human resources, manufacturing, and procurement.
The IT business module had a robust matrix reporting structure, which enhanced and linked with cross-functional and global management with a view of trying to fix the lapses and flaws specifically in these areas. The other four services and product divisions integrated with the corporate administration group include corporate finance, legal, regulatory affairs, and strategy team. These teams are tasked with requirements gathering and solutions development including a new application or enhancement to the existing system.
The IT Steering Committee in Terra Firma allocated an annual IT a budget of NZ$150 million for investment in several services. Financing of their Email and PC support were accomplished on a cost recovery basis using the taxes collected from all departments. Other general functions including the financial reporting functionality alongside the tentative projects such as video conferencing were financed using the annual budget. System application deployment and development, maintenance and purchasing were directly and solely financed by the internal business unit, considering that the committee provided an oversight and supervisory role on the use of external service providers. Lastly the committee in charge of steering assisted with generating architectural standards sets for both Terra Firma processes and developments including the IT infrastructure, architecture and the business needs and demands. In other words, the IT forms a resource platform through Terra Firma Company monitors, record and communicates its ongoing deliverables and business values.
