BB&T Corporation experienced a high rate of turnover for bank tellers at an approximate rate of 30 percent per year. The bank requires the implementation of an effective on-the-job training (OJT) for the tellers. The training will equip the tellers with the skills required to undertake the jobs and minimize their preferred option of leaving the organization when they feel that they cannot handle their duties. The following methods can be used to enhance effective OJT:
1. Simulation Training
Simulation is a training technique where the organization replicates the processes and procedures at its offices into guided experiences that can amplify the real experiences and tasks in the offices. Simulation works in an interactive fashion. For instance, the bank has several subsidiaries within the country. Due to the magnitude of the transactions, it can set aside three branches for training. The system at the training centers should be similar to the systems in the real banking branches. Tellers may practice their skills before joining their colleagues in the other branches. The bank may limit the amount of money involved in transactions at these centers to minimize the risk of loss.
2. Apprenticeship
It refers to the practice of working with another individual or organization in order to learn a particular trade. In apprenticeship, the person learning the skill begins by observing the activities involved and the manner in which they are done by an experienced partner. The employee then starts undertaking the tasks under close supervision of an experienced. In this case, BB&T Corporation can effect training through apprenticeship by pairing the new tellers with the experienced staff. They must learn the system through observation and supervised practice of the teller process.
