Enabling others to act:
Team work is very important for an organization, society, group or nation’s success. Different people working under one roof for a common aim requires team effort. Also, every person working in the department has a duty to perform and take part in the progressive steps. Hence there is a need to enable every person in the department so that they work with devotion.
Enabling others to act is the real tough job that the leader of the department, group, or nation has to do. There are two major things that are discussed for encouraging others to act. First of all, leader should have the ability to construct self confidence in the followers. Same is applied for the departments where there is need to make people recognize of their abilities and motivating them by inciting, dedication, commitment and self-determination in them. Once the abilities and capacities are realized, it is also important to delegate powers. It is the identification of the good leader that good leader instead of hoarding the power, give it away. So that one may utilize his or her powers fully with authority and rather than feeling alienated to the system, feels part of it and thus, get motivated and encouraged to act. Hence to enable people to act is necessary to make them aware of their own hidden abilities and give them relevant authority.
Moreover, leading by example is also a worth mentioning and applauding strategy. A leader should always try to set a high standard example for not only winning people’s hearts and minds for his following, but also for motivating them to do the work. An excellent precedence set by a leader always brings positive energy in his followers. Also, continuous review of followers’ work and giving them positive feedback whenever they do something good enough is a useful strategy for encouraging people to act. It is generally referred to as reward based strategy.
In a nutshell, a good leader should have the ability to become the model for others. Leader should be one on whom people do trust and listen. Leader whether the boss of organization or any political leader, should never under estimate the hard work of his people.
Encouraging the heart:
Encouraging the heart is a very crucial factor in leadership roles. In this practice, the leader should have the ability to uplift the moral of the followers or the staff i.e. working under his supervision. Hence in this reflection, we discuss about how to uplift the moral of the selected social group.
Selected social group is the department at work and the task is to encourage the staff and people working in the organization. If the organization and staff members are under my supervision and the task is to recognize their contribution, I can try to appreciate the work of the individuals and as an appreciation. Now there can be many ways of appreciating the individuals. One of them can be by awarding incentives. Hence awarding incentives such as bonuses and other honorariums can uplift their moral and appreciation can be done.
Moreover, it is also very necessary for encouraging the heart of the people by celebrating the values and victories of the people that are working in the department. For example, if the person of my department gets his incremented pay and promotion as well, to celebrate employees happiness can encourage the heart of the employee. Hence celebrating the values and victories can enhance the outcome of the employee and beneficial for the department.
In addition, to create the emotional resonance, it is essential to celebrate the victories of the employee as in this paper we are talking about the department at work as an example. For example, discussing about the Dredging Corporation of India, the CEO Abraham Kuruvilla sent his employees every month a newsletter that was full of the success stories (Kouzes 21). Moreover, as discussed also in the paper, he implanted in his organization the public recognition program in which an employee was rewarded with the employee of the month award that encourages the employees (Kouzes 21). Hence in such a way CEO encouraged his employees awaked an urge in his employees to work harder for the next month.
