Types Of Sampling And Their Purpose As Used In Various Research Articles Research Paper Examples

Five research articles have been explored with the aim of identifying their purpose of study and the sampling technique used. While analyzing various sampling techniques applied during the research as well as data presentation, the effectiveness of the selected method in exposing the confounding facts to the audience were also considered. The first article considered during the study was from the journal of “Substance Abuse: Research and Treatment”. The article was about identifying whether the effects of drug abuse are among contributing factors that lead to harmful suicide attempts that could result into suicide completion (da Silveira 2014). The article was authored by Dartiu Xavier da Silveira et al in 2014. Out of 86 patients examined, 81% engaged in harmful suicide attempts due to influence from drug abuse. The research applied stratified random sampling as the subjects selected represented male and female as well as adults and youths. The study revealed the most affected gender, with male being the most predominant. Stratified random sampling was appropriate for the study as it conformed to hospital arrangement of male, female and youth wards.
The second article considered was again form substance abuse journal, the research being a descriptive study on misuse of substances while under psychiatric emergency service (PES). The article was authored by Yves Chaput et al in 2014. The research relied on the data acquired from four PES databases, for a span of two years (Chaput 2014). The data had already classified patients into three groups according to primary diagnose and secondary diagnose. Analysis revealed that the research had applied cluster sampling technique. Although the recording was promising, it represented only 30% of 18000 visits to the PES. This rendered the entire data unreliable for making a conclusion.
The other research article on consideration was titled “A Randomized Control Trial of a Chronic Care Intervention for Homeless Women With Alcohol Use Problems” (Upshur 2014). The research was conducted by Carole Upshur et al. the research applied a chronic care unit to identify problems that homeless women addicted to alcohol go through in a bid to manage alcohol drinking habit. The results of the study showed an improvement in drinking levels due to clinician interventions accompanied by intensive care, for a period of six months. Provision of housing did not have much influence on the outcome. The type of research applied is simple random sampling. The study was effective on the selected population (82 women) but the results might not be practical if the study group is large. The method observed ethical issues by providing housing facilities to the homeless women during the study.
Also, another article reviewed was about child sexual abuse. The article authored by Georgia Babatsikos focuses on identifying the role played by parents in managing the risks of sexual abuse among their children (Babatsikos 2015). Parents were interviewed on various ways of managing sexual abuse without scaring their children. The study applied proportionate stratified sampling as the number of Australian women selected for study was a representative of the women population. Sampling method was effective as the women interviewed provided reliable information applied in the formulation of social grounded theory. The research involved women from different background to carter for all ethical concerns of managing sexual abuse, while talking to children.
Finally, analysis of the article by Anne Krayer on the effects of child sexual abuse among adults’ self was explored. The article focuses on identifying the impacts of child sexual abuse to the adults. A total of 30 available adults were involved in the study (Krayer 2015). The results revealed tension among the interviewed adults leading to a suggestion to embrace interpersonal connections and social support. Analysis revealed that the research employed convenience sampling by considering available adults for the study. The method was effective and addressed the study objectives effectively, despite having used a small sample to represent victims of child sexual abuse.
In all the above studies the variables were children either their reaction under influence of drugs or in regards to sexual abuse among them. The studies compromised of analyses of both substance abuse and sexual exploitation subjected to children under various circumstances. The researches vividly depicts the independent variable as the children with respect to their parents effort to guard, guide as well as influence in educating them about sexuality and substance abuse.
