It is very obvious that we all study, read and write a lot in the classes. Till our academic life, all we do is learn in the classroom. However, in the professional life, we don’t have to sit in the classroom and learn. This does not mean that the process of learning is over. The process of learning is not destination or a mile stone to achieve in life, it is a continuous process. Even after finishing the school life, one can keep learning by using the skills like reading, writing, observation, etc. in my case, I have come across many such events in my life where I have used such skills that I learned in my academic life. I am an IT professional, and I deal with computers and software all day. However, one particular event that occurred in my life that rejuvenated my reading and writing skills. In this paper the center of the discussion will be that event, and how I used my reading and writing skills to tackle that situation.
For one of our outsourcing project from an NGO that works in the field of disaster management, a special request came from the client’s to work on a disaster recovery plan for the typhoon ‘Katerina’. Now, being the team member, it was my responsibility to design a disaster recovery plan. I have no experience in the field of disaster management whatsoever. It was difficult as well as challenging tot take up this task. My initial response tot this project was to deny the involvement, but then I realized to use my observation skills to read and write and learn everything about the subject. One would be surprised to know how much our mind can grasp after hearing, seeing, reading or writing about something. There is no subject or topic in this world that one cannot understand by reading or writing about it.
Hence, I started with doing all the background research about the current scenario of the disaster. I searched all the newspapers, magazines, tabloids and statistical analysis of the impact of the typhoon around the country. Later, I started to read about the scientific explanations about the disaster in many popular journals and scholar papers. That research gave me the partial idea on how to proceed on the disaster recovery plan. I started coordinating with my teammates and colleagues on the topic. Usually, our team meetings are on the possible software developments, but this time our meeting was on the disaster recovery plans. I opened up with the idea of sharing the ideas and research with my team mates on the possible plans. This is how we were able to use the good old skills of reading and writing into something that is new environment.
Further, I expanded my reading over the historical background of the disasters in our country. I also searched the recovery and damage control plans of the various governmental organizations and NGOs. I also worked out the plans about rescue missions, awareness campaigns, relocation procedures, food supply, refugee camps, sanitation, etc. I listed out all the activities that is done during these scenarios. Then I wrote down all the possible complications in such attempts of disaster recovery. Later, I consulted an expert on the disaster recovery to give a small talk on the ideas about the disaster recovery. Me and my team sat down and learned in detail everything about the disaster recovery plans. This way, my knowledge on this project started to get on higher levels.
Later, I started to expand my readings about different plans. I wrote down two to three fail safe plans for the project. I made the skeleton and a rough draft of the plan. Later, with the help of my team, we created an outlined draft of the plan. Later, I gave the editing touch to the plan.
