Using Call Inside Classroom (Computer) Essay Examples
CALL is a Computer Assisted Language Learning process whereby technology in the form of computers is used. It’s a process of “transformation in learning institutions where implementation is undertaken”. Current educators advocate for the use of technology in language learning as they consider it had many advantages to both the learner and teachers.
One of the advantages is that Computer assisted language learning is of interest and motivation. Language teaching in the classroom is at times boring and monotonous and may even cause frustration, and students can lose motivation and interest. A CALL program allows students to learn English through the use of the computer. They learn through animated graphics, computer games, and problem-solving techniques. This makes learning and drills so interesting to the students.
The second advantage is that language learners can get instant feedback. When a positive feedback delays, students become discouraged, and delayed negative feedback affect a crucial knowledge that students are required to attain. Computers can provide immediate feedback, and this will help the learners avoid misconceptions at an early stage.
The third advantage is the optimal use of learning time. Use of computers enables students to choose their appropriate time for learning anytime and anywhere. It makes learning convenient as students have the chance to review learning materials as many times they want without time limitation.
In addition, CALL provides error analysis. Teachers can use the computer database to differentiate and classify the type of general error and error on account of the influence brought about by the first language.
Finally, CALL facilitates repetitive and guide practice. Learners have freedom of expression within certain bounds that programmers create. Such bounds include vocabulary, grammar among others. Although there are many advantages of CALL, application of CALL programs and current technology have disadvantages. The first advantage is in terms of educational cost. The educational will increase because computers will be required, and students will have to purchase basic requirements. This will strain students from weak and vulnerable backgrounds, and some of them may not even afford the requirements at all.
The second disadvantage is the lack of trained teachers. Teachers and students are required to have basic knowledge of technology and use a computer. Hence, only those who have computer knowledge will benefit from the use of CALL program.
In addition, there is a problem with imperfect current CALL programs. The software of CALL deals with writing skills, reading and listening. The speaking programs that have been developed have limited functionalities. This is because they are not able to diagnose the learners’ problems with syntax, pronunciation, and usage.
Finally, CALL is unable to handle unexpected situations. The learning situation faced by a second-language learner is ever changing. Since the computer has artificial intelligence only, it cannot deal with the learning problems that a student expects or even respond to learner’s questions immediately is in the case where teachers are used in language teaching.
My experience using computer technology in the educational process was effective and swift. I had sufficient time and freedom to choose from the alternatives that computer provided when I was learning. I was also able to get immediate feedbacks and be able to avoid misconceptions and errors at an early stage.
Conclusively, using such technologies as power point, smart board or games as a teacher will make learning interesting to the students because they get motivated by the use of modern technology, so they do not get bored. When learning becomes exciting, students’ relation and interaction with the teacher improves.
