The Water for People Chikwawa Program is widely characterized by six community three hundred and thirty household latrines (330 latrines). The program took off in the January of 2006 and extended to end in December 2006 marking a period of exactly one year to completion ("Chikwawa Project"). The Water for people NGO came together to mobilize the program that would enable the funding of the entire program to mobilize people so that there would be a related increase in the sanitation of the region. The NGO would come together to ensure that women and children of the region were kept free from the infections that were coming up due to poor sanitation. Creation of a total of over three hundred latrines within the region will limit the level of infections that are realized due to lack of proper sanitation within the region.
The aid group in question that took place in the sanitation program with an aim of reducing related diseases such as cholera is a non-governmental organization. The NGO has widely specialized in the sector of disaster relief and in this case it was acting to salvage a situation on the community in question. Sanitation was a major distress in this case and they had to come up with a solution that would address the main problem from the root cause. Having infectious diseases attack people would be well addressed by basing on the causative agent. Working on treating the people would not be an effective way if they were going to remain within the same environment. Addressing sanitation by increasing the number of latrines for each household by the Water for people NGO would save more lives because Chakwawa was a permanent residence and home for them. They would still go back to their home even after they were treated from the infections.
The Water for people NGO had a plan of executing the project. A plan created to execute the project for a period of exactly one year. The budget indicated an amount to be spent that totals to $21, 186. Of the total amount that was planned to cater for the project, a total of $20,086 was fully funded by the external bodies where the rest of the amount of sum $1000 being produced by the community itself.
The major projected was initiated by the community of Chikwawa itself when they came together and demanded the District Assemble to act and offer them what they needed. The community fought hard in this case to ensure that all the programs were initiated from the beginning to the end. In the end, the project has seen a lot of developments within the region where apart from improving the hygiene and offering clean water for the people who live in the neighborhood, it has improved the living standards by offering a series of opportunities for the people who are developing in the region ("Home | Water For People"). Young people have been able to secure opportunities that have made them improve their skills and knowledge. They have also been able to accumulate enough money that has been pumped in other sectors of the economy around the community that has had a related positive impact.
The major funding of the project to cover efficient water supply and improve the hygiene of the community is initiated by supporters mainly from the North America. The major NGOs that stood up to task to ensure that they raise money basing on the project proposal budget and save the lives of children and women of the region include the Water for people NGO, Rotary and AWWA foundations. The amount of money that was in budget to be raised to cater for water for the seven villages was $163, 320 ("School Sanitation Program in Chikwawa District - GlobalGiving"). The community contribution amount was set at $1000 basing on the economy of Malawi compared to other related countries. To initiate the project and swing it into action, the major six communities were also to contribute some of the materials that were designed to construct the shallow wells as well as the labor plan by offering the needed help in due time as the project developed.
The major problem with the project that focuses on ensuing water is fully supplied in the region of Malawi by 2018 is the sustainability plan. The major investors in this case who took heart to chip in and ensure that there was enough water for the people of Malawi by targeting a few communities that they thought had far much challenges compare to other sections of the country might not be fully available to oversee that the program is fully supported when it comes to maintaining and sustaining its lifetime after it has been erected. Therefore, the water users within the communities mainly looking at the individual users will be liable to the maintainability and sustainability of the entire project. They are expected to make an annual contribution of $100 to ensure that it is directed to offering the project a longer lifetime. In the end, the six communities are expected to contribute an amount of $600 ("Water for People Malawi Meets Target of Safe Water and Sanitation in Chikwawa | Malawi Nyasa Times – Malawi Breaking News in Malawi"). All the communities are also expected to have a management committee that will ensure all the activities are overseen through auditors that are active in order to increase the level of transparency and accountability. They will also be responsible for determining the amount that each user must pay and the specific dates of collection to ensure that they have enough spare parts within their reach. The communities will also have trained committee in the sector of maintenance and operation to ensure technological viability which will cost the community extra funding for the sake of maintaining the project and keeping it alive.
The aftermaths of the project were realized with successful series of events where most of the deadly disease that had previously dominated was reduced. The success of the project was followed after the main water project failed. Many people had access to better sanitation in the region with good latrine systems that would serve many households.
