Meeting water needs in Arizona has been faced by shortages. This has been attributed to the current high rate of climate change and global warming as well as intensive human activities that create pressure on available water sources. The Arizona Department of Water Resources has anticipated that water scarcity may worsen in the next few decades owing the rapidly increasing population, which is expected to triple by 2110. In this regard, through collaboration by the State Government, the department has formulated strategies geared towards increasing water supply in Arizona. One of these strategies is importation of water from desalinated seawater sources. This process shall involve pumping water from Pacific Ocean or Gulf of California. Additionally, importation process shall entail pumping as well as desalinating ground water from Southern California or Arizona.
Importation of desalinated seawater is considered relatively cheaper compared to seeking fresh water sources that would involve undertaking new surveys and research. Additionally, saline water is in plentiful, meaning that it could serve the needs of the population in Sun Valley Arizona. On the other hand, desalination could have adverse effects on the environment for instance; the disposal of salts after the desalination process could affect the ecosystem. Pumping huge volumes of sea water could also affect aquatic ecosystems in Arizona.

Water importation in Sun Valley Arizona has been considered a major option by the Arizona Department of Water Resources. This option is expected to serve Arizona as a whole for the next one hundred years as the Department and other stakeholders explore other means of water supply.
