Friendship is a kind of relationship that is binding for both people in a sense of mutual care and regard. The problem of necessity of such kind of relations for human beings is shown in the novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck.
In this context I would like to mention character of George Milton. He is portrayed as small man and is completely opposite to his friend Lennie. Their friendship here is represented as a chance to be saved from loneliness. George is a man who can think and who thinks for both of them. He often gets angry at his friend just because he does not understand how a man like Lennie can be so light-headed and irrational. They even conceive in different categories. As the author says George often “gives him hell”. But these anger and irritation fade as soon as George remembers inability of Lennie to think and analyze as George wants that is why George represents both anger and understanding.
Lennie gives George feeling of being special. When they are together George undertakes responsibility for both of them, because Lennie does not know how and when to feel guilty and why such things as death and murder are more than just “bad things”. So as the story develops we can see that these men both complement each other by their friendship, give each other those things that are missing in them.
At the end of the book George is left alone again blaming himself in Lennie's death. Their friendship has been bringing enthusiasm into George life and his best friend’s death makes George life miserable and aimless. Living without friend, without caring and loving somebody becomes an end to dreams of George.
