One of the most important skills learned throughout a college career is the ability to think critically. However, there are several barriers to critical thinking that many students experience. It has been my experience that fatigue, emotional lows and highs, as well as the effects of overcrowding have been barriers to my process of critical thinking. I have learned to use music, working out, and the relaxing environment of quiet places to help overcome these barriers to critical thinking.
For example, when I am tired from excessive study, or if I need to study and already feel tired, I have noticed that fast-tempo music helps me concentrate on my studies. I have experimented with several different types of music, but I have found that music with a fast beat -- and not a lot of lulling melody -- helps me focus the best. I increase the volume a bit as well, which helps me stay awake and more alert.
In addition, working out has proved to be a stress-buster, but it has also helped regulate my emotional lows and highs -- a cycle which has, at times, been a barrier to my ability to think critically. Working out has improved my mental stamina, relieve pain, and help me de-fuse aggression or sadness. Working out, whether it be cardio, strength, or flexibility training, has also helped strengthen my mind, and my powers of critical thinking.
Lastly, over-crowding on campus has contributed to my levels of emotional stress. Through trial-and-error, I have discovered that quiet places (such as parks or libraries) help me think clearer, thus improving my overall critical thinking skills. Thus, I have learned that engaging in other activities helps improve my ability to think critically, a skill I will continue to hone throughout my academic career -- and beyond.
