I used to be a police officer and later on an investigator at Abu Dhabi police department and can perfectly relate to the issues and facts that have been raised in the article. My main responsibilities were order protection and crime investigation. And, unfortunately, the problem of motivation of modern employees has become an important issue for many companies and organizations, and police department is not an exception. A lot of our employees are facing two main problems: lack of motivation and disappointment.
What were you expectation of the job? Has the position met your expectations?
When I first arrived to my department, I was full of energy, strength and willingness to improve the department and make it an example for others. I honestly overloaded myself with work extra assignment, and I should admit the level of adrenaline in my blood has always been high enough to get me going and the life seemed to be bright and promising. This feeling lasted for half a year. As time passed, I got an idea about how we could improve the operation of our department. I wrote a detailed explanation of my plan supported by actual facts and figures. The whole process of preparations definitely made me feel more helpful and needed. However, my proposal got rejected as soon as the director looked through it. He did like the idea itself, and the plans I was going to implement would definitely work and make the lives of the citizens easier, but cost more expensive and needed restructuring of our department. My chief was not too keen of the idea of investing too much effort in our project, and in my opinion, who was too worried about the changes that would cause and their influence on his lives. Therefore, my proposal was rejected right from the start for “not answering the criteria and not being applicable for our department”. I think that was the moment for me when I got totally disappointed in my job and switched to the first group of workers – those who do everything according to the procedure.
What were your employer’s expectations? Have you met your employer’s expectations?
As for me employer, I would say I have definitely met the expectations of the department, since I had the education required from the position and the skills the employer wanted to find in the potential employees. However, judging from the issue which happened to me after working for 6 months in the department, I should say that this opinion has changed. Maybe, I did meet the general criteria but when it came to practice and direct communication with the management, our visions appeared to be different.
The other point I totally liked in the article is that there is always a misconception between employer’s and employee’s expectations. In order to achieve a high level of labor productivity, there is a need to make sure that both sides are persuading the same goals. That is exactly why I think and employer should disclose as much information about the opened position as he possible can.
Personally I really liked the suggestion mentioned in the article, and I do believe it would be extremely useful for all the young employees. A psychological contract, according to the article, represents equal mutual believes, values and obligation. This method indeed helps a lot since it mainly orientated on young generation which will make the whole process of adjusting to the new environment easier for the freshmen and support the old employees. Fortunately or not, it is impossible to hire an excellent person who will not take to much time in order to get used to his/her coworkers. However, it is possible to hire an excellent specialist for a particular job and how fast he will get used to everything in the company and psychological contracts help a lot.
On the other hand, an employee needs to investigate more about the vacancy before applying since in the end we end up working for the companies we hate with the people who do not value us.
What knowledge, skills and abilities did you bring to the position that you are using?
In my case, I have carefully studied all advantages and disadvantages of my future career, so I can say, my decision was well thought. I have always been into sport so I am in a good shape and could always bare any physical stress. I have always been an attentive kid and enjoyed helping the others, especially elderly. After I have successfully graduated from INSTITUTION, I have been recommended to join the police department. I was more than ready for the changes and for this job. So in my case, I would say I did not get enough information about my direct responsibilities and obligations. Maybe, I would have chosen another field to realize myself, other than police armed forced.
What knowledge, skills and abilities are you acquiring on the job?
For me, working in public service was more than a job but a way of life. You cannot simply stop being a police officer as soon as you walk out of the building. It does not really matter where you are, which country and hour, you will always keep attention on what was going on around you and, if there is any fight or injustice happening around, you just can’t help but interfere. And I do not mean to sound like a superhero, not at all. If I should point out the most important skills I was acquiring, I would definitely name communication and understanding. During my working career, I have dealt with so many cases which would be absolutely impossible to solve if I could not communicate with the people involved and understand the reasons behind their actions.
What have you learned from the job to date?
During my career at Abu Dhabi police department, I have raised in myself a strong feeling of responsibility for other citizens. You feel like it is your most important duty to make sure everything is going well and no one gets hurt.
Nevertheless, I have always found my job to be one of the greatest experiences and opportunities which happened in my life. I am not planning to stop here since the most important thing in life is self-development. I think nothing in this world can be better than a smile full of gratitude and a look of relief on person’s face when he/she realizes that everything bad has already passed. I do not think you can easily become specialist suitable for public service. In my opinion, it is the case when a person should have been born for the reason of helping them others overcome difficulties. I have already developed myself and reached my limits in police department, and I think it is high time for me to switch places and try something new.
