In the face of rigorous demands from parents and students struggling with college and the rising competition around, colleges have started giving away A’s to their students at a startling rate which is also lessening the values of their degrees. From the cheaper colleges to the biggest ones, grades are being handed out at the same rates. In some departments, A’s are given only to continue that particular subject. Sometimes the students corner the most sensitive teachers threatening them to give them A’s. Then there are universities like Phoenix that have expanded and built themselves into great universities where students are in a race to achieve the highest grades. In previous times, students lived with their given grades and today they are often complaining about having their grades altered. This happens only because parents and students wish to have their money paid back for. All subjects are not given equal weight which is why the grades differ. If this continues, the value of degrees will be suppressed, and quality of education will decrease.
The reasons, why colleges shower their students with A's, is only to improve the reputation of the college and to produce ‘satisfied’ students. In today’s world, imparting education has been reduced to a mere business; a money-making profession where knowledge is rather sold than earned. The focus has shifted from learning and gaining good grades to racing ahead and scoring the highest grade, even if the student has not worked hard enough for it. This policy has made the professors mere catalysts in giving the required A grade, and they are under constant burden on being sued for, not giving the higher mark. Colleges need to revise this policy, improve the standards required for achieving the A grade with honest hard work.
