Informational Interview Assignment

For this assignment, I chose to interview the owner of Transtemporal Publishing, Ltd., D.R. Baker. The company is based in Kewaunee, Wisconsin, USA. Their website is www.transtemppub.com, and their e-mail address is . They can be reached at 920.639.6709. Transtemporal Publishing has been in business for five years (since 2010), and assists writers with both traditional publishing and electronic publishing, editing, research, and cover design -- among other things. I am extremely interested in becoming a writer and/or editor, as well as being in the publishing field. I thought that Mr. Baker would be a good source of information, as he has written two critically-acclaimed books of poetry, and has extensive contacts in the publishing industry. I interviewed Mr. Baker over the phone on March 24, 2015 at approximately 7:00 p.m., CST.

Question 1

Answer: Well, since my childhood, I have always been interested in writing. When I attended the University of Arizona, I worked as a volunteer for one of the campus newspapers. The student population is about 35,000 there, so they really needed to have two newspapers to address the needs of a very diverse population. Anyway, my passion has always been books -- whether I am reading them, writing them, or helping writers turn their manuscripts into finished products. I began as a journalist, and have learned a lot along the way. For me, there simply was no other option. This is my passion.

Question 2

What are the pros and cons of owning your own business?
Answer: Some of the pros are: independence, being your own boss, and setting your own schedule. Some of the cons are: working long days, filing taxes, and striving for the unattainable on behalf of your clients -- perfection.

Question 3

What is the recommended route to get into the publication field?
Answer: There really are no hard-and-fast rules, but I highly recommend a college education for a couple of reasons. Universities are safe havens where students not only learn, but can begin working on their passions (such as writing and publishing) right away, networking, and joining professional organizations that help nurture a young writer's talents. Also, seminars and conferences are invaluable tools.

Question 4

What is your typical day like?
Answer: Typically, I wake up very early -- at about 5:30, get ready for work, and fire up my computer. Since I work at home, I really do not need to wear anything but my pajamas, but when I meet with clients, I wear business casual. Then, I begin working on my current projects. Later in the day, I call upon both current, present, and prospective clients and find out what their needs are. Every day is a variation upon this theme.

Question 5

Are there other employees in your organization?
Answer: Currently, we employ one researcher and social media expert, as well as one out-of-house illustrator.
Question 6
What are your future goals?
Answer: We are really looking forward to an increased presence in social media, as well as book promotion with videography, audiobooks, and increased website traffic due to these marketing and promotional efforts.

SUMMARY

I learned quite a bit from Mr. Baker. I was surprised that he works so hard, yet owns his own small business. I really want to start out freelance writing, or content writing for the web as well. He was a very enthusiastic and inspiring person who encouraged me to follow my passion, and never give up on my dreams. Because of his contagious enthusiasm, I will pursue my dream to be a writer and work in the publishing industry. My next step is to search for various writing organizations and clubs in order to network with people with similar ambitions.
