The nursing shortages have heavily affected the nursing profession. Consequently, many resources have been injected to nursing schools to increase their capacity to produce nurses. The result with this is a large number of nursing graduates being provided to the nursing industry, but equipped with little skills required to handle the job. Joining a nursing manager residency program can be beneficial in alleviating such a problem. The program will allow student graduates to increase their confidence and skills in their work environment. As a member of the nursing program, one becomes more competent and committed to the job and may overall increase nurse satisfaction.
The nursing residency program provides a mentoring component. Most people in a new job will feel overwhelmed. Mentoring seeks to offer assistance to search individuals by promoting psychological, social and clinical assistance. As a nurse, one becomes acquainted with the different work situations easily under mentorship of an experienced and competent nurse. According to the Methodist Health System (2007), being in a nursing manager residency program helps one appreciate and feel what it is to be a manager. As a nurse, one can understand what it takes and entails to be a nurse manager.
Goals of Nurse Manager Residency
The nurse manager residency seeks to improve the knowledge of the registered nurse to have more advanced competencies through the formal configurations that do not constitute an academic setting (Cadmus and Johansen, 2012). The residency will develop more equipped first-line nurse managers that can redesign work processes that ensure safety and effectiveness in treating patients.
