Kornbluh wrote the Win-Win flexibility after a while of working within the private sector as an economist. During this period, she identified the huge task played by parents in juggling between caregiving, work and parenting. The text suggests a work and family program that individuals should try to implement. In order to achieve great parenthood, individuals must try to achieve flexibility and conduct their parenting duties at a balance with their employment activities. However, often the issue of being flexible in the workplace has been seen as weakness whereby flexibility comes at a cost of competitiveness within the organization(Kornbluh 498). While this situation persists, the number of mothers within the workforce continues to increase thus causing a challenge to dual income families.
Most workers go to their workplaces under a fixed routine, with little or no control of their work schedules. Additionally, working parents today have a higher dependency ratio with more individuals either old or young who depend on them. The U.S requires a Win-Win flexibility, which allows workers to set a schedule for themselves with their employers. The personal schedule should include a formal request, which allows the employee to ask for some time to work within the organizational premise while some more to work from home (Christensen 57). The work schedule should also include staggered hours and telecommuting. Other approaches include shift working and job sharing to allow individuals in allocating their time as well as their responsibilities as per their availability (Vega 78).
With such employee requests, the employer will be the only party to accept or reject the request. The request on the other hand should be granted unless the employer proves that granting the request will lead to a low job efficiency or impair the workers safety. The employer within such a program will be expected to have a flexible schedule which provides the same pension, holiday, FMLA benefits as well as vacation. The plan should cover parents who include legal guardians, parents, and individuals offering foster care. Other caregivers should also fall within the system whereby they will create a 24-hour economy. The flexible system will ensures that all individuals have a well-managed lifestyle, which allows them to increase their competitiveness. For the USA economy, it will be easier to compete with other economies such as Japan.
Analyze and Write
It indicates that the number of hours spend by dual income families while trying to earn an income is significantly high. By 1979 the combined hours stood at 60 while in the new millennium, the working hours stood at 70 (Kornbluh 498).
The employees indicated that the relationship between their work and the family relationships were affected by the schedules. Work had a huge effect on the family responsibilities thus not enough time for working families to enjoy family time. This analysis presents a clear depiction of the changes in the working society(Kornbluh 499).
Providing statistics is helpful to the readers in a number of ways. First, it ensures that the readers understand that the analysis has been well researched by the Konrbluh. Furthermore, it presents a clear guideline to the current statistics as she quotes a recent research. Indicating that a research is recent is effective in ensuring that the data presented to the readers is useful. As such, the readers are interested in information from recent studies, which reflects the trends.
