Statement of Purpose
Applicant:
I hereby declare that I wrote the following statement of purpose independently without using any sources or auxiliary means other than the ones indicated and that everything stated is true to the best of my knowledge.
My interest in the field of power engineering arose when I was attending the courses dedicated to energy conversion and power electronics. The completion of these courses helped me with the identification of my future career and the field of study that I want to dedicate my life to.
Today, power engineers tend to face different challenges, not only in Kazakhstan where inefficient use of energy resources along with obsolete power transmission technologies impede industrial growth of the country. Guided by my interest in the subject, and to measure up to these challenges, I have absorbed material in the lectures, debated with my colleagues during office hours, studied variousjournals and scholarly articles according tot he reasearches that I was into.
The brightest example of my research experience, was the process of conducting research under the mentorship of Professor Lagoa in the area of control systems. The research process introduced me to the application of optimization techniques for solving system identification problems. The main objective oft he research was to implement the algorithm that approximated the model of the system under the noise constraints. Although, the requirement oft he study was to obtain an accurate model with a simple representation. The approach used for a model approximation was based on the atomic norm decomposition method. Since I had not taken optimization courses before, this area required much self-study. The material was diffucult to understand and use on practice, however, my experience in high school experience helped me with this. Back in high school, I had participated in Math Olympiad, which required me to learn material which was beyond the scope of my class. This experience helped me during my research, and I hope to find an approrpate application of it at the graduate school.
Overall, this was a valuable research experience. Besides working with advanced professional information, I had an opportunity to master effective communication in professional environment. Regular meetings with the professor and his PhD students have taught me to focus on the research objectives and to identify potentioal errors and methods to fix them. Such opportunity to work with professionals motivated me to continue my education, improve my professional and personal skills, and apply for graduate school, as a result.
In addition to learning, I love to share my knowledge with the people around me. This semester, I had an opportunity to work as a lab assistant for the circuits and devices class. While helping students to grasp laboratory activities, I gained important experiences myself. Laboratory environment often creates various situations where there is no correct answer known beforehand, therefore it cultivated in me the ability to make fast decisions in critical situations, based on my experience or logical reasoning.
I have chosen TUM as the place of my personal development, as the reputation of the University, along with the strong faculty and large research facilities in the area of power systems, encourage me to become a part of TUM. Furhtermore, an opportunity to study in the University that is actively cooperating with the industry allows to work on the complex technological problems that I find beneficial for the society in long-term perspective.
Therefore, I belive that You will find my professional background and plans outlined above acceptable to have honor to study in your esteemed University.
